From the best of the best and the worst of the worst The Cody gives HIS (meaning bias) UFC awards for the year 2010. Some you might agree some you may not, but I am bored and just feel like doing this and Im sure the UFC or some MMA site has already done this but eh whatever I wanna do it to. Lets get started
The Cody's Award for best new comer goes to........................................... PHIL DAVIS
With 8-0 pro record and a 4-0 record in the UFC in his first year, I think Phil Davis is a perfect winner for The Cody's best new comer. With impressive victories over Brian Stann, Alexander Gustafsson, Rodney Wallace and Tim Boestch this kid could be the next big thing at 205.
The Cody's Award for biggest judge screw job goes to.............................NAM PHAN
As we have seen for this entire year there have been many questionable scoring and decisions in the UFC, Maynard over Diaz another notable decision that many believed was a screw job is a prime example. But this decision clearly proves that alchohol (fuckin cant spell) and late night partying can do to you. Nam Phan in many opinions dominated the fight with superior stand up but somehow two judges saw it differently. Must of not been watching the fight.
The Cody's Award for biggest upset goes to..................................................EDGAR OVER PENN
This one was hard I wanted to go with Mike Russow over Todd Duffee just because Duffee was winning the fight 13 mins. But I tossed my biased aside and picked Frankie Edgar shocking the mma world by defeating BJ Penn. Now, some people dont really believe Frankie Edgar won but that doesnt matter on his record it will state he beat BJ Penn who is coming off two wins over fighters who were supposed to be much bigger tests for Penn than Edgar in Kenny Florian and Diego Sanchez. Edgar's win bad decision or not will go down as one of the biggest upsets in MMA history.
The Cody's award for worst fight of the year goes to...................................FRANK MIR VS MIRKO CRO COP
Now when I say this I am telling the 100 percent truth this isnt me trying to be funny. In the 2nd round of this fight I FELL ASLEEP. Yes on my couch at home with my girlfriend fell asleep I didnt know Frank Mir knocked out Cro Cop up until my girlfriend woke me up and told me what happened. In my opinion after watching the fight on the internet, if Frank Mir does not knock him out you could easily call that fight a draw cause neither fighter does ANYTHING. Id rather watch two elementary school girls fight at the playground then ever watch that damn fight again. Seriously.
The Cody's award for submission of the year goes to....................................... a tie! between...........SILVA OVER SONNEN AND LEBEN OVER AKIYAMA.
Ok i threw in my bias a bit for this one because ok obviously Silva deserves it because for 4 rounds he was being dominated by the testosterone filled Chael Sonnen and in the 5th and final round his last chance to save his "pound for pound" monacre he pulls out a submission. But but but when your a huge fan of Chris Leben and he pulls out ALSO a last minute submission over the heavily favored Akiyama after be taken down and punched at will you gotta say it deserves an award itself. So both in my book get submission of the year.
The Cody's award for biggest downfall of 2010 goes to...................................TYSON GRIFFIN
Before 2010, Tyson Griffin had only lost twice in the UFC both to former Lightweight champion Sean Sherk and current lightweight champion Frankie Edgar. But then 2010 rolls in and he suffers not 1 not 2 but 3 straight losses to guys he SHOULD OF beaten. Evan Dunham, Takanori Gomi, and Nik Lentz. He was once the guy known for being the first man to beat Urijah Faber and the next big thing in the UFC a future champion. Now after 2010 he'll be lucky to even fight in the UFC again.
The Cody's award for best overall win of 2010 goes to..................................................CAIN VELESQUEZ OVER BROCK LESNAR.
As much as it pains me to say cause I hate the m'fer. Cain's win over Brock Lesnar had to be the biggest win of the year for any fighter. Sure there was the upsets, and the shocking knockouts but Cain became the first mexican heavyweight champion in combat sport history and destroyed the man who was known to be the UFC's Fedor Emelianenko in Brock Lesnar. After running through Heath Herring, Randy Couture, Frank Mir and showing heart against Shane Carwin.....Velesquez knocked that all away with his first round TKO.
The Cody's award for worst overall UFC event of the year goes to.................UFC 112 INVINCEABLE
With a horribly put together card and two title fights that ended in controversy...one a seemingly bad decision the other the birth of the dancing douchebag I would have to say UFC 112 was the worst card of the year. Edgar vs Penn was somewhat entertaining but after the 3rd round in died off really fast. And Anderson Silva, I dont hate him for what he did but you have to put an asterisk on the top of his head forever for his performance. And not the great of a supporting cast sent the whole card into a downward spiral.
The Cody's award for Knockout of the year goes to............................................MIKE RUSSOW OVER TODD DUFFEE
13 minutes your getting your face beaten in, you have been hurt, your bloodied and on your way to one of the most embarassing losses of your career. But then out of no where the only punch you've landed all night knocks the lights out of the next big thing and a 7-1 favorite. I say that earns you knockout of the year dont you?
And Finally...
The Cody's award for fight of the year goes to.....................................................CARLOS CONDIT VS RORY MACDONALD
This one was a tough one, I originally thought the first Shogun vs Machida fight was in 2010 but it was in late 2009...damn. So I searched and there was Leben vs Akiyama, Lauzon vs Stout, Riddle vs Pearson, and Sanchez vs Thiago but I was looking and I watching this fight again. And I know there will be a ton of disagreements but I love this back and forth fight between Condit and Macdonald, Rory Macdonald (who Im wondering why hasnt fought in the UFC since) Was this big up and comer and was living up to his hype but I think the adrenaline dump got to him and he gassed in the 3rd and Condit took over and stopped him (sort of) great fight so I am going to pick it for my fight of the year.
Well that will do it.......damn how i missed posting in here. Take care guys.
